Introduction
Once you have decided that you want to delve deep into the ServiceNow Developer learning path, the major question that we have in mind is How to be ServiceNow Developer or what the path should be.
The answer is simple yet it has a lot of caveats associated with it.
In this article, you will understand the complete path you should opt for, once you have decided that ServiceNow Development is something you want to explore.
Caveats
Prerequisites
Yes, there are some Prerequisites when you are starting with the process of “How to be ServiceNow Developer”. But there is a good part as well, i.e. it is not at all mandatory.
What I mean here is that it is going to be helpful for you if you know JavaScript. Because then it will boost your chances of getting better into the ServiceNow Development world.
Too many resources/ Lack of resources
On certain topics, there are too many resources but on some of them, you will not find any topic at all.
I am talking about YouTube, Blogs, etc. but I would not recommend you going through them as an initial step. The best resource is NowLearning when you are just starting. Otherwise, you will hop on to these topics one by one and understand none of them.

Complete your CSA
Since you are completely new to this, I would highly recommend completing your ServiceNow fundamentals.
How could you do that?
After setting up your PDI, try to complete your NowLearning CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. Wait, what if you do not have the learning credits or the ServiceNow voucher, in that case, what option do you have? You need to understand that it is not mandatory to complete your CSA certification now. Rather the important part is to go through that course. CSA fundamentals are very essential as it is going to give you an idea of how this ServiceNow platform works. By far, I have never seen the best beginner ServiceNow Development course anywhere.
But, let’s say you already know the basics of ServiceNow, and maybe you just want to go further, only then you can avoid taking this course.
Time to start with scripting
The next step in this “How to be ServiceNow Developer” series should be to start with the scripting part.
It will be very helpful for you if you can appear for the NowLearning Certified Application Developer (CAD) course, but I would treat it as a non-mandatory one unlike CSA because you can find content around scripting very easily. But as you remember, I already told you that there is a prerequisite which is JavaScript. If you know it, well and good. Even if you do not know that, there is an ample amount of scope for you to learn ServiceNow scripting.
I have also added details on how you can Master ServiceNow scripting from scratch.
Understand ITSM
I could have easily mentioned the above headline as “Understand any module” but I did not because ITSM is one of the most fundamental modules of ServiceNow. So the next thing you should go for is the understanding of the complete ITSM module. What comes under ITSM module – Fundamentals and Implementation. And both are mandatory.
I would also highly recommend going through CIS-ITSM (Certified Implementation Specialist – IT Service Management) certification but again only when you have vouchers or learning credits. You can go through the path that I have created for complete ITSM understanding.
Want to go Advanced?
Advanced Scripting
Once you are done with all of the above pointers, now is the time to go for the Advanced level of scripting. Indeed it is very important and we should be able to understand things from an advanced level. The best way to learn advanced scripting in this “How to be ServiceNow Developer” series is to learn or develop a Service portal. If you want me to tell you how to do that, feel free to reach out via the comment below.
One more module
The next big thing is to learn one more module besides ITSM. I know it sounds a lot but believe me it will all be worth it once you start giving interviews and have knowledge beyond ITSM. You can start with HRSD. I’ve already curated a path for the HRSD module. And I will certainly be adding other modules to the list as well.
What other Resources should I follow?
We have so many important resources these days to refer to. Let’s talk about some of them :
- ServiceNow Docs – For Documentation purposes
- ServiceNow Community – For asking any questions if you are stuck anywhere
If you are thinking it’s too late to start with the “How to be ServiceNow Developer”, there is something you should remember – Understand before it’s Too Late.
